Well after their huff of 12 months - the BBC came back with force for their attempt at the Grand Prix of Popular Song of 1959!

They stuck with their semi-final idea and, again, invited some of the biggest stars known to the British public at that time to sing.  They did, however, reduce the number of Semi Finals from 3 to 2 and condensed the selection process to a week.

Semi Final 1 - Taking place on February 2nd 1959 - Had the following songs taking part.

Song Artist(s) Psn
  Marion Keene
Sing Little Birdie Pearl Carr & Teddy Johnson  Q
Suddenly Glen Mason  Q
  Don Rennie
One lonely heart Steve Martin  Q
  Sheila Buxton

Marion Keene was an established big band singer with the Jack Parnell Orchestra - Pearl and Teddy had already got successful careers both singly, and since their marriage in 1955.

Semi Final 2 took place on February 5th 1959 and was the semi final of returners with 2 of the class of '57 taking part again.

Song Artist(s) Psn
This is my Town Lita Roza  Q
  Lester Ferguson
If Only I Could Live my Life Again Pearl Carr & Teddy Johnson
  Rosemary Squires
  John Hanson
  Valerie Shane

There is only one qualifier known - but as per the first semi final - 3 songs did indeed get through to the final.

Said final took place on February 7th 1959 hosted by Pete Murray.  The six qualifiers were re-drawn for order of appearance.  Unfortunately, the full results and method of choosing a song is not known - but I would hazard a guess to say that it was regional juries again.  The known result goes as follows :

Song Artist(s) Place
Sing Little Birdie Pearl Carr & Teddy Johnson 1
Suddenly Glen Mason 3
One Lonely Heart Steve Martin -
This is my Town Lita Roza 2

So Pearl and Teddy got the ticket to the Eurovision in Cannes.  Unfortunately, when they got there they didn't recon on Teddy Scholten and a rather large chunk of votes from the Italian Jury early on that put the Dutch into a virtually unassailable lead.  Ah well..... at least the UK were on track- weren't they?? - And on that note - enjoy once again, the strains of Pearl and Teddy in Cannes and wonder what might have been.... had it not been for 7 Italians!
